A question often asked in the LGBTQ community is “What are your pronouns"? I’m cisgender so my pronouns are she/her/hers. NEVER assume someone’s gender identity so be respectful and ask for their pronouns.
Another thing people ask are definitions for terms they often hear so here's a list (not all inclusive):
Transgender: those who don’t identify or are uncomfortable with their assigned genders and gender roles.
Cisgender: a term for people whose gender identity matches the gender assigned for their physical sex. From the Latin root “cis” meaning “on this side.”
Genderqueer: a rejection of the gender binary (male/female) in favor of a more fluid and non-traditional identity.
Non-binary: someone who experiences a gender identity that is neither exclusively male or female or is in between.
FTM: female-to-male, a transgender individual born as a female but who has claimed a male identity through clothing, surgery, or attitude changes.
MTF: male-to-female, a transgender individual born as a male but who has claimed a female identity through clothing, surgery, or attitude changes.
Ally: a heterosexual person who actively supports LGBTQ individuals and causes.
Gender identity: how you think of your own gender and not entirely contingent upon your biological gender/sex.
